こんな英語、言ったら危険!(総集編 その2)



■ 彼が通りかかった

× He passed on.
○ He passed by.

A: Is Thomas here?
B: No, but he passed by a few minutes ago.
A: Oh, there's something I want to talk to him about.

■ おかまいなく

× Don't bother me.
○ Don't bother.

A: Would you like me to pick you up at the station?
B: Don't bother. I can catch the bus.
A: Are you sure?

■ よく聞こえないのですが

× I can't listen to you.
○ I can't hear you.

A: I'm sorry, I can't hear you.
B: Oh, let me turn up the microphone. How about this?
A: That's much better.

■ 彼の飛行機が故障した

× His airplane broke up.
○ His airplane broke down.

A: Is Tim going to fly his plane to Ohio?
B: No, he's going by car. His airplane broke down.
A: That's too bad.

■ 私の夫は酒飲みです

× My husband drinks.
○ My husband drinks a lot.

A: What are you buying?
B: Just some beer. My husband drinks a lot.
A: So do I.

■ 牛肉にします

× I have a beef.
○ I'll have beef.

A: Would you like chicken or beef?
B: I'll have beef.
A: OK. Here you are.
